About the Watersnoodmuseum
The Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk is housed in four Phoenix caissons that were used in 1953 to close the last and largest dike breach after the flood disaster of February 1st, 1953. Since 2001, these caissons have told the story of the flood.
Building on this history, the museum also focuses on the growing challenges of climate change, rising sea levels, and public awareness around these themes. It is a place of remembrance, learning, and future thinking. Since January 2016, the museum has been officially recognised as the National Knowledge and Remembrance Centre for the 1953 Flood, by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.
In 2023, the Watersnoodmuseum welcomed over 137,000 visitors. Since 2019, the museum has also included the adjacent museum café and knowledge hub Het Vijfde Caisson as part of its organisation.
The Watersnoodmuseum is entering an important phase of development, working to secure its long-term future by expanding and professionalising both the museum and the knowledge centre. Much of the required funding is sourced from external partners and funds.
