In July 2021, two factors came together in Europe. Water levels were already high, and it rained very hard and for a long time. In the Netherlands, this had major consequences, especially in Limburg.
How much more water than usual flowed through the streams in Limburg?

In Limburg, streams and rivers overflowed their banks. As a result, places like the center of Valkenburg were flooded. The damage to homes, animals, and cars amounted to millions of euros.
"During the floods, around 84,000 plastic items floated through the Maas. The wildlife and plants in Limburg will suffer from this for centuries to come."
Local Help
No one was fully prepared or insured for such a disaster. Much of the assistance came from local organizations, such as the volunteers of "Bergse Kracht." They ensured that 400 families received the necessary supplies to rebuild their lives.
Homes Swept Away
In Belgium and Germany, the consequences were even more severe. Houses, bridges, and roads were completely destroyed. In Belgium, 41 people lost their lives, and in Germany, over 180. Thousands of people were left homeless.
For Rosa
Benjamin van Bunderen lost his close friend Rosa during the floods in Belgium. In her memory, he launched the campaign "Climate Justice For Rosa" in 2021.

Due to climate change, there is 3 to 19% more rainfall than a century ago, and there are twice as many heavy downpours as in the 1950s. As a result, floods are becoming more frequent.
